The catalogue explores the distinctive artistic style and visual language of the artist during the peak of his career in the 1920s–1930s, drawing parallels between his works created in emigration and those of Russian artists working in Russia during the same period. The publication features 45 reproductions tracing the shared artistic currents that developed simultaneously in Russia and the Russian diaspora abroad.

The work of one of the most outstanding masters of the 20th century and one of the pioneers of the Russian avant-garde movement is presented through a direct comparison with works by Nikolai Zagrekov, who studied in Mashkov's studio at VKhUTEMAS in the early 1920s.
